Upcoming Events - Psychiatry Interest Group

In the ever growing and changing world of psychiatry, come learn about a new, exciting, and rapidly expanding field of psychiatry! Sports psychiatry is a discipline committed to preventing, diagnosing, and treating the psychiatrically related medical issues confronting athletes. This includes determining the relationship between psychology and athletic performance, medically managing mental illness, knowledge of the effects of medication on athletic training, and consultations in a group setting such as with teams or the player-coach relationship (Reardon & Factor, 2012). Michael Karanja, a fourth-year medical student and member of the International Society for Sports Psychiatry, will be giving a presentation on the many roles of sports psychiatrist and the many opportunities the field has. He will be joined by Dr. David McDuff to help answer questions and help students get involved. Dr. McDuff is the team psychiatrist for the Baltimore Orioles, a former team psychiatrist for the Baltimore Ravens, and is one of only eight individuals worldwide serving on the International Olympic Committee's Mental Health Workgroup. We hope that you will be able to join us in spreading the interest in sports psychiatry!
