Case

A 53 year old patient undergoes a CT angiogram for a suspected aortic aneurysm. An incidental finding shows an embolic clot has broken free and completely blocked the right colic artery. However, the patient is exhibiting no symptoms.

Question 2/3 - Which structure is normally most directly supplied by the right colic artery?

Click on your selected option(s) below  (correct = 1, over-thinking = 2+)

Incorrect. All small intestine regions of jejunum to ileum are supplied by intestinal branches (from 15-20 branches).

Incorrect. The ileocolic artery courses directly to the cecum supplying cecum and the ileocolic junction region.

Correct! The ascending colon is to the right, targeted by the right colic artery.

Incorrect. The middle colic artery is directed anteriorly from the superior mesenteric artery to the transverse colon.

Incorrect.  The quadratus lumborum muscle is part of the body wall supplied by the lumbar segmental arteries. Although regions of the large intestine become secondarily retroperitoneal and fused to the body wall, blood supply does not change during that process and the structures do not share functional connectivity.
