The Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Interest Group (AAIIG) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine aims to serve as an academic, professional, and community-focused organization dedicated to increasing awareness, mentorship, and clinical exposure in the fi elds of allergy, asthma, and immunology.
Allergy and immunology is a rapidly evolving specialty that intersects with pediatrics, internal medicine, pulmonology, dermatology, rheumatology, ENT, and infectious disease. Given the rising prevalence of asthma, food allergies, eczema, autoimmune diseases, and immunodeficiency disorders, medical students should gain early exposure to the mechanisms, diagnosis, and management of these conditions. However, allergy and immunology are often underrepresented in preclinical and clinical curricula, and many students have a limited understanding of the specialty's scope and career pathways.
